Drought

Drought

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Matthew 5:6

My little city in Texas is in the midst of a drought. Not only have we lacked adequate rainfall, but our daily temperatures have soared over 100 degrees on many days. The early heat and the rarity of rainfall have taken a toll on grass, trees, shrubs and gardens. As a new retiree, I have become so aware of the consequences of weather and our dependence on God’s provision in this area.

I’ve noticed that all plants are stressed by the extreme heat. Unshaded areas are particularly damaged by the harsh sun. Stressed plants are vulnerable to invasive disease and untamed insects. Dry soil gets hard and crusty making water pool on the surface and evaporate before quenching thirst. Production of good fruit is diminished by the unrelenting strain.

The Lord speaks to me through His creation! I, too, become withered by the oppressions of life if not sheltered and nourished by Him. Psalm 121:5 says, The Lord is your shade. He protects and provides relief from the harshness of the world.  He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things (Psalm 107:9). When we allow the Lord to daily tend our soul-needs, we can lead healthy and vibrant lives and have the ability, through Him, to fight the temptations that could cripple us, wither us, and damage our ability to bear fruit.

Lord, let me lean into you. Satisfy me with the meat of your Word and water of your Spirit in me. Be my shade in the heat of oppression and hide me in your hand when storms buffet me. Protect me from people and circumstances that aim to steal my joy, kill my hope, and destroy my faith. Produce the fruit of your Spirit in me.
