What I Learned from Dry Eyes

What I Learned from Dry Eyes

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1

For the past two fall seasons, I’ve experienced severely dry eyes. Raw, irritated and red. Most of the time I just want to close them.

I can’t seem to find just one product to help. So I have an arsenal of remedies including:

  • Artificial tear drops

  • Eyelid cleansing pads

  • Eye ointment for nighttime

  • Antibiotic ointment every other night

  • Humidifier

  • Two sets of vitamin supplements

Since I’ve been using a combination of all these products, I seem to notice some improvement. Even with consistent treatment, some days, my eyes still feel and look irritated.

One day I began to compare my eyes to my spiritual state. I think my soul is dry too. Perhaps I’ve been focusing on my physical problem instead of feeding my spirit.

As I thought on this, I realized we have a collection of resources to help us saturate our spirit with Jesus too.

Some of these include:

  • Devotions

  • Bible study

  • Christian music

  • Godly friends

  • Church

  • Sermons on podcasts

We can use a combination of these resources to point us back to the Bible and to Jesus. Just like with my eyes, spiritual refreshment takes consistency. I can’t expect to read a devotion one day and then skip a few days. Or just go to church on Sunday and expect to stay close with God all week.

One way I stay refreshed it listening to Christian music in my car. While it can’t be my only resource, it’s one of my favorite ways to meditate on scripture.

How do you keep yourself from getting spiritually dry?
