JESUS GREW

"And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.(Luke 2:52)

As a mother, this verse has been very helpful to me. From the time each of my four children were very young, I realized I wanted them to grew in the same way as Christ.

First of all in wisdom such as knowing God's word, seeking His will and discerning right from wrong. Most importantly that each would come to know Christ personally. Many of us have taken our children to church since they were babies and we easily assume that they will become believers. It was not until I had teenagers, I realized how important it was for each one of them to come face to face with Christ and make their faith their own.

Secondly, our children will grow physically and all to quickly develop into young men and women. Their grandmother often said that she would like to put a brick on their head to slow them down. Teaching them to eat healthy and understand the importance of protecting their earthly bodies is a challenge in this fast paced society with increased drug and alcohol use, smoking, and promiscuity.

Thirdly, Christ grew in favor with men and God. We also want our children to develop a character that will be pleasing to God and men. Honesty, respectfulness and self-control are only a few. Proverbs 10:9 tells us that "He who walks in integrity walks securely."

As we approach 1997, we have another year of opportunity to teach and pray for our children, but remember "what they see is what you get." The "do as I say and not as I do" parenting style does not work. God's Word provides excellent instruction for parenting. Joining a parenting support group or parenting classes can be of great benefit. You will quickly realize you are not alone. This can be a great comfort. I know. Quoting a current popular saying, "I've been there, done that."
