"You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins...and they will call him Immanuel - which means, God with us."
How were you named? your children? Family or popular, we search for one with meaning to us. Mostly, we choose names of people we like, for one character trait or another.
Mary and Joseph had no choice in the matter. The angel told them. His name will be Jesus. And in those days, names actually predicted behavior. Jesus translates as "the Lord saves". That was His true nature, the reason for His birth!
The angel also said that the people would call Jesus Immanuel, meaning "God with us". God, always present, but invisible to the eye, loved us sufficiently to appear in the only form that we could recognize. God with us, to show us how to live. And then to die for us. To live to die to save us.
Did you catch that? God's plan is a person, who has the name, Jesus, "the Lord saves". And the way of God's plan has the name, Immanuel, "God with us". I am in awe. God's plan is a person with a name.
