"When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town
learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought
an alabaster jar of perfume, and...she stood behind him at his
feet weeping," LUKE 7:37-38
This is the week of Thanksgiving. A good week to consider thankful
hearts of New Testament women.
You know this first story well. One of the infamous women of the
town. Yet here she is, showing her face in a religious leader's
home. Uninvited. How dare she!
A beautiful alabaster jar is in her hands. But before she can
remove the stopper, her tears gush forth, in torrents. On her
knees by now, all the remorse, of all those terrible things, pours
from her soul.
I am touched by the tears, more so than the exquisite perfume
that follows. Tender tears of humility well up from a heart of
thanksgiving. The fragrance lingers on the air. But it is the
spontaneous overflow that is sweet, from a heart broken, in love
with her Jesus.
And I am humbled at the flood of those tears. She knew the depth
of Jesus' love, despite her sin. I do too, but has my thanksgiving
ever flowed so freely, so sweetly, from within?
Thank you, Jesus!
