Biblical scholars have defined the word "blessed" in the Beatitudes as "happy," and say that it describes the inner condition of a believer in Jesus Christ. I have a note written in my Bible, beside the phrase "poor in spirit," interpreted to mean "feels needy." Now, if I put these together, the verse would read this way, "Happy are those who feel needy, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." The world we live in would never think of describing a "needy" person as a happy person, but I want us to look at the believer who is needy.
Someone who is needy is constantly looking for more of the things that are necessary to live. As believers we need to recognize our poverty in spiritual things, and be constantly looking for Christ to meet these needs. We need Christ to meet the spiritual needs that we have. "And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). It is great to know that Jesus Christ can meet all the spiritual needs that we have, but what are those needs? Personally, I think we are on our own here. Each of us have different needs in our lives. Personal salvation would probably be the one need that we all have in common. We are each assured that this need is met when we profess our faith in Jesus Christ.
Take time today to evaluate where you are the most spiritually "needy." Look at your walk with Jesus Christ and see where you are coming up short. Maybe you first need to repent and seek forgiveness for things you have done wrong and burdens you have failed to turn over to Jesus. That is where I plan to start. List those spiritual needs that come to mind, and claim His promise to fill those needs. Do you remember what the reward is? The kingdom of Heaven.
Feeling blessed,
