The Drought of '98...crop failure

O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

The summer of 1998 is setting records for drought in Texas, the worst since the 1950s. Agricultural losses are estimated at $2.1 billion. The cost to the farmers, and to us, could triple that. Cotton, corn, sorghum, soybean and hay crops have all been devastated by day after day of searing heat with nary a drop of rain.

Interesting how you begin to focus on rain. The newspaper featured a "days without rain" countdown and requested "drought/heat" jokes, deadline July 19th or first rain. All conversations centered around rain. Clouds were scanned for signs of rain. Prayers were offered. Tribal rain dances were performed. Texas was getting serious about this drought.

What amazes me though is that our land is dry and weary without spiritual water, and there is nary a sign of interest by the general public. There is little talk, hardly any prayer, and certainly few headlines in the paper. Oh, we are all atwitter over the current scandal. But are we serious about right and wrong? There is drought in our land.

O God, turn our hearts to you, in this spiritually dry land.

      Nancy
