Country Roads...True beauty remains

Your beauty should not come from outward adornment... Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. 1 Peter 3:3-4

Driving through Mennonite country in southern Ontario is like taking a step back in time. The washline is hung with hand-stitched quilts, airing in the breeze. The windmill pumps up the water from the well. There is no electricity in the house, but a light in the barn. Girls and boys, dressed in their mennonite garb, play softball in the school yard. The farmers go to town in their horse and buggy. The church yard is full on Sunday. A gentler time!

In our world, we are over our heads in amenities and adornment. Too much progress has developed in us a shop-till-you-drop attitude. What a pity! Of course you need to look nice, but inner beauty speaks more loudly than Hilfiger and Calvin Klein.

Peter recommends the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Gentleness is strength under control. Grace of the soul. The gentle person speaks the right words at the right time for the right reason. A quiet spirit keeps the peace.

So let's try on a little gentleness, and a quiet spirit, for size.
