Country Roads...A barn is still a barn

You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house...you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:5,9

As we drove down those back roads one summer, we stopped to watch a barn raising in progress. The mennonite community had shown up to assist their neighbor. The men were nailing boards, mixing cement, and busily roofing. The women were in the gardens picking vegetables for supper. When we returned a day later, the barn was raised.

Today many of the old barns are still in good repair, but more and more the bright red siding of modern structures is replacing the weathered barnboard and tin sheds. A crew can come in and put up a modern barn in as little time as those mennonite men, but a barn is still a barn.

Peter tells us that we are like living stones, being built into a spiritual house. We are still a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God. And your purpose is still the same, to declare the praises of him who called you.

So as the dynamic of praise changes in our churches, the focus must continue to be on God.
