BLOOM WHERE YOU'RE PLANTED

"For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

I grew up in Tennessee, but I married a Texan who took me to live in the pine trees of East Texas. So there I was--a newly wed, in a new state, new town, new church, new job and no friends. Needless to say, there were some lonely days of adjustment. One day as I was browsing in a shop, I saw a plaque covered with flowers and butterflies and words that said, "Bloom where you're planted". Immediately I knew it was put there for me. It was as if God were whispering in my ear, "I've placed you here for a reason. I have plans for you, and I'm here with you. Let me work in you and help you to grow and prosper here."

I bought the plaque and took it as my own personal motto, and it helped me through many periods of adjustment and homesickness. My husband and I lived in this town for eight years, and God, as always, was true to His Word. We prospered there in so many ways. Our church was truly a "church family", and we made so many wonderful friends of all ages who helped us feel at home. He provided opportunities for spiritual growth and teachers that became role models who led me in taking "giant strides" in my walk with the Lord. We were blessed with the most wonderful group of young married couple friends who, after 25 years and many miles, are still some of our closest friends. Yes, God had great plans for me there!

It's so easy to live in the land of wishful thinking. "Life would be better if.... Or I could be happy if only..." We can "if only" ourselves to death and live defeated and unproductive lives. Or we can choose to be one who finds purpose and satisfaction where we are, who has joy and meaning now. Let's not live on rose-colored memories or wishing that our circumstances would improve. There can be joy in the present.

Where has God planted you? Wherever it is, He has plans for you there--plans to prosper you and give you a future. Are you blooming?
