The mine at Jerome, Arizona, used a process called electrowinning, or electroplating, to refine the ore. An electric current, passed through a copper rich solution, adhered the pure copper to a starter sheet at the rate of 200 pounds of copper per week. Impurities settled to the bottom of the tank and were in turn processed to recover amounts of gold, silver and zinc. What could not be used was called slag. And slag had to be disposed of.
The trials of life serve to test my faith and refine my character. The word of God separates out my good qualities, the copper, gold, silver and zinc, from the moral filth and evil that is present in my life. It is left to me to discard my daily sins on the slag heap. And to dispose of the slag.
God provides the powerful current to refine me on the inside, if I humbly accept the lessons He is teaching me. The thin starter plate of my new life in Christ has the pure ore of God's word deposited on it in 200 pound layers. I begin to feel the power of His current. And as I discard the slag, my faith in God becomes more evident.
