If you have a mine, you need a smelter. A smelter means noxious fumes. Jerome, Arizona, was no exception. The tall smokestacks belched forth black clouds of chemical debris. Not only did the smoke smell, but no one knew the harm that would be done to the vegetation until mature oaks, cedars and pines were all destroyed.
Not long after the trees died, people began to suffer from all sorts of respiratory ailments. Many of the miners and townsfolk died in their twenties. The air in Jerome was definitely not of good quality.
I wonder how good the air quality is around me? Do I fuss and fume in anger? Do I belch out caustic remarks that harm those around me?
Or, do I listen to what the other person is saying before I speak? Do I give others the benefit of the doubt instead of getting my feelings hurt by innocent remarks? Do I choose my words carefully, only after I have calmed down?
Giving vent to anger is not conducive to righteous living.
