HE BRINGS QUIET

"The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17 NIV)

". . . He will quiet you with His love, . . ." Quiet. Just saying the word can bring calm into a room full of junior high girls. Of course, that depends on how loudly you say the word. This is not really related to the quiet that God brings into our storms but it does let you know where I am in my life right now. With a junior high girl around, quiet is very precious in our home.

I try to keep my home very quiet, when no one else is around. I rarely turn on the television or any music. I like stillness, and there is not much of it in my home except between the hours of eight and three. That may sound boring to you, but I think it is what helps me keep my sanity in this frenzied world. This is still not the quiet that God is talking about. I think He is referring to the quiet that brings a calm assurance into your soul that everything is under control.

God encourages us to make "entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings" for all men, so we can lead "a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity." (1 Timothy 2:1-2 RSV) In 1 Peter 3:3-4 He says that our beauty "should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."

God wants us to develop a quiet spirit. It comes from learning whom He is and what He does in our lives. We do that through listening and obeying His word. When we have quiet times of listening, we can hear the words of direction He has for us. When we are focused on God's plan for our life there is quiet for our soul.

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4:7-9 NIV) That's the plan!

Just remember, the One who can quiet a storm with a word (Mark 4:39), or speak to a demon and silence it (Mark 1:25) is the One who is in control of our lives. Our personal peace and quiet will come from knowing that the Lord Jesus is in control of our lives.
