We broke this verse down yesterday, and listed the promises which it contains. So, for the remainder of this week I want us to look at each promise separately.
"The Lord your God is with you . . ." What a comfort to know He is with us, all around us, and inside us. In the Old Testament God was often with the people as clouds, a voice, a fire, a wind and as the Holy Spirt. His presence seemed to come and go as He chose to send it to the people. King Saul had the presence of the Spirit with him, but it left him. (1 Samuel 16:14) David pleaded with the Lord not to take the Holy Spirit from him. (Psalm 51:11) There are several other times in the Old Testament when God took His presence away from the people because of their disobedience; but He was always faithful to return at the first sign of true repentance.
Now, because of Jesus Christ and His ultimate sacrifice and forgiveness, we, as believers, never have to worry about the presence of the Lord leaving us. The Holy Spirit is with us because of the promise of Jesus Christ. "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- [17] the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you." (John 14:16-17 NIV)
God is with us, in the presence of a comforting and empowering Spirit within us. You are not alone, the Holy Spirit is there to support and guide you through each struggle. He does not leave us physically alone either. He is always ready to give us other believers to encourage us. "For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city." (Acts 18:10 NIV) "Sometimes we can feel alone or isolated, especially when we see wickedness all around us and when we are persecuted for our faith. Usually, however, there are others in the neighborhood or community who also follow Christ. Ask God to lead you to them."* Don't allow loneliness to overtake you. God is with you and will provide the comfort you need.
