We started along Bright Angel Trail into the Canyon. We had time for a 1.5 mile hike down, elevation drop of 1100 feet. Easy going down. Not so easy on the return trip.
But along the trail I could touch the ruggedness of rock surfaces alternately smoothed and notched by the river's ravage. I could see the sharp demarcations of the strata. I was able to walk on God's bedrock and enjoy it. The descent was fun. A piece of cake. I could rule this mountain. On the hike back up I had different thoughts, with every breath.
And I was reminded by loose rocks on the trail, of the workers who maintained it. "Do not Litter" signs should not have to be in this pristine setting - yet they were. Plus we were warned - take plenty of water, avoid dehydration.
Yes, God made me ruler over this magnificence. He was not just out to create an awesome spectacle of nature, but asked me to care for His creation. It takes work. And if I do not use common sense, the mountain will get the best of me.
I am reminded, by the greatness of the mountain, that You alone are majestic, O Lord!
