What does it mean that Jesus is the truth? We need to do a little word study to really understand. The dictionary defines truth as "conformity with fact or reality." This word "truth" in the Bible dictionary means "unveiled reality...the manifested, the veritable essence of matter." Jesus is the "unveiled reality". He is the essence of matter. As my teenage son would say, "He's It, man!" There is a lot of talk about reality today--reality based TV, teens facing the reality of life. Jesus says, "I am reality, unveiled, showing you what is true and right."*
True belief in Jesus expresses itself in action. There is a chain reaction that follows our proper response to His teaching. (1) We hold to, or continue to obey, them. (2)Then we are disciples. A disciple is more than a pupil. It is one who accepts the instruction and makes it their rule of conduct. We make the words of Jesus the very atmosphere of our life. (3)We know the truth. "Know" is a judicial word here than means "to know by trial" or by personal experience of life. It denotes intimacy. Jesus wants us to know Him more intimately day by day. The more we continue in His Word the more we know Him. (4)Then we live in His precious liberty. We are set free from sin, worry and the lies of the Evil One who would steal our joy and cause us to live in guilt and shame. We have freedom from fear and wrong habits. We have freedom to love and be loved and to express the personality that God intended us to be when He created us as an individual.
All this is a growth process. We start out as baby Christians and hopefully grow to maturity. He is The Truth. So hold fast to His teaching, live as His disciple, know Him more fully and be set free!
