Going for the Gold...Claiming the Medal

"Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." 1 Corinthians 9:25

Figure Skating is a physically demanding sport, requiring the same arduous training as other winter Olympic events. The beauty and grace of the skaters' movements are far from effortless. Artistic design and technical skill must blend to please the discerning eye of a panel of judges. The suspense of the marking is tough on skaters and coaches, and fans, as they wait rink-side for scores to be posted.

This winter we watched 15-year old Tara Lipinski perform with such precision and style that she was able to surpass her teammate, Michelle Kwan, by a fraction of a point and take the gold. Year after year seasoned skaters lose their crowns to youth. The glory of the gold is fleeting.

But we compete in life for a crown that will be ours forever. I should train. I need to run with perseverance. It helps if I obey the truth and keep the faith. But if I know Jesus, I will gain the gold medal that is eternal. At the end of my life there will not be a panel of judges trying to decide if my performance is a fraction of a point superior to another's. Thank you, Jesus!
