Going for the Gold...Training

:Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training." 1 Corinthians 9:25a

The writings of the apostle Paul paint, for us, a vivid word picture of life as an Olympic event...

In the 1998 winter Olympics U.S. skiier, Pikabo Street, competed well. The hours of training were gruelling, and even more so considering a recent injury. In her first event she finished in great time. From the bottom of the hill she watched the clock. So did we. As seconds ticked away for each new racer, excitement mounted. The gold medal was hers!

Unfortunately, at the end of the games Pikabo fell and fractured her femur. Back to months of rehab. Back to extra gruelling training to overcome time laid off for an injury. Back to the uncertainty of competing well enough to win. But in order to compete, she must train once more.

Paul personally kept to strict training rules. He ate only spiritual food. He exercised his gifts regularly. He spent hours with his coach, Jesus, at his side. He coached others, like Timothy, in the exercises and rules of the game.

How about your training? Are you eating spiritual food every day? Exercising your gifts frequently? Strengthening your relationship with Jesus? Can you coach others?
