This is one of my favorite verses of scripture, perhaps because I need it so much. (As I mentioned earlier, I'm a mother of two teenagers!) Each of us has periods of life where we are called upon to do something difficult. It may be a task we have chosen or one thrust upon us by the circumstances of life. Either way, it's tough. We may be tempted to quit or wish we could quit. We don't have a good attitude anymore. It's hard work. It's not fun. We may say to ourselves, "Is it worth it?", "Am I doing any good?", "I can't keep on like this."
But take heart as we look closer at this verse. The first word "let" indicates choice. We have a choice of what our attitude will be toward the task--whether it's one of despair or persistence. "I hate this!" or "I'm going to keep on keeping on!" "Doing good" reminds us that we are doing something good. We are doing the right thing. "At the proper time" tells us it will be in God's time, and His timing is perfect. Haven't we all impatiently pushed a situation in the past and encountered problems that could have been avoided if we had waited on His timing? "We will reap a harvest" means there will be results; there will be reward and blessing. I've walked with the Lord long enough to know there is nothing to compare with His blessing! This is a promise, and God always keeps His promise. Some of God's promises have no requirement from us, but a few do, and this is one of them. "If we do not give up" we will reap a harvest--this part is up to us.
Choose to have an attitude of persistence--keep on keeping on. Continue doing your good work, and one day there will be a harvest!
