Psalm 18:31b
"...And who is the Rock except our God?"
We were heading to Amarillo to visit our daughter and her husband, with instructions to pack our hiking boots. How silly! Amarillo is nothing but flat land. You can see forever...until you drive a half-hour outside town. There, the magnificent Palo Dura canyon has been dug out of rock by prior river erosion. Statuesque cliffs rise, striated with yellows and all shades of red. The flat land has a depth and character like one you cannot imagine, until you see the cross-section of the canyon, cut away by nature.
Some days I stand on the flat land of my life and wonder just what is underfoot. God is nowhere to be seen in the mess of the moment, or in the sameness of the daily grind. I have forgotten that He has laid an eternity of rock under me. First, He created a bedrock of holiness. On top, He laid love and grace, mercy and justice. And an obvious line of faithfulness...years of promises made, and kept. These variegated striations I see, if I look in the cross-section so carefully drawn in His Book.
God, the Rock, is underfoot!
