If I am to pattern my life after Jesus' life, to be conformed to the likeness of Jesus (Romans 8:29), I need to discover the most important thing on Jesus' mind. To my way of thinking that would be His definition of the first and greatest command...love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
Jesus had such a deep devotion for His Father. As a child of God, I need to have that same devotion for my heavenly Father.
My dad loved me. He didn't care that I was tall and gangly, freckle-faced, and fell over my feet when I ran. I was his and that's all that mattered. So I had no trouble loving him in return, with all my heart and soul and mind.
Not all of you have received that love from your earthly fathers, but listen to this: How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God(1 John 3:1)! Your heavenly Father loved you enough to call you His child and to provide you a home in heaven.
So first things first - love God back!
